I have used adsense for over a year now and it has been great!
having said that, I do not follow the recomended placements that adsense suggests but put the adds where I want them so they do not interfere too much with my site layout. But, I also have the luxuary of having a site that is over 10 years old and in a niche area and well known
If you are new to adsense, with a new site ( I have just this week created a new site for a friend) I suggest the following which I did:
Set up the channels in adsense so you can track which sections of your site are working best
Customise the colours to fit your site - make sure that you have the hex codes the same # that you use in your site
If you have a site with inc files, make a copy of the main page with another name then using an inc file, try out different placements on your test front page - this way users do not see 10 different versions. when you find one that you like, put it into your main page (and others)
- and a suggestion that I have not done for my own site, but for the new one:
Put an adsense where it can be seen when the site first loads and not at the bottom of the page where a member has to scroll for it.
Finally, stats at Adsense can change majorly from day to day. It will not be a nice steady increase, there will be highs and lows. There could be up to 60% difference in hits / money earned between one month and the next month. So if you do well one month and not so well the next month, it is ok
